Welcome to Diglipur

Diglipur Island is located in the North Andaman Islands at a distance of about 320 Kilometers from Port Blair. Diglipur has a total geographical area of about 1400 square kilometers and is considered the biggest inhabited town of the Andaman Islands. Just like the other islands in Andamans, people living here are also seen living together like a small India, speaking various Indian languages and belonging to varied religious and cultural beliefs.

Best Things to Do in Diglipur Island Andaman

1. Climb Saddle Peak

Saddle Peak, at 732 meters, is the highest point in the Bay of Bengal archipelago. The region is home to a variety of natural habitats, including a dense rainforest that supports six native tree species, thirteen native bird species, and thirty-six native insect species.

Owing to the forest's abundance, it has been turned into a national park, providing anyone who can conquer the difficult ascent with stunning aerial views of the neighboring islands. The 8 kilometer ascent is quite steep. Even the most seasoned hikers could find it difficult on a bright day! The sole river in the Andaman Islands, Kalpong, winds through the forest and provides a cool freshwater stream with drinking water.

2.At Ross and Smith, go swimming

A slender beach bar spanning fifty meters connects these magnificent twin islands. At high tide, this fine white sandbar goes under the water, and at low tide, it comes to the surface once more. The wild, undeveloped beaches are among the most picturesque on the islands, and the warm, clear waters are a sight to behold.

The nicest thing is that there are rarely many people at the beach, so you can usually enjoy the entire view to yourself. Smith Island boasts the most amenities, including large bamboo huts with lots of cover, restrooms, and changing areas. Few people travel out to Ross Island, which is covered in deep trees and accessible by traversing a sandbar.

3. See turtles lay their eggs and hatch at Kalipur Beach.

You may be able to see turtles breeding and hatching if you visit Diglipur between December and April. One of the few beaches in the world where the four kinds of sea turtles—the Hawksbill, Leatherback, Olive Ridley, and Green—come to lay their eggs is Kalipur.

The government constructed a hatchery there for this reason, and if you're lucky, you might be able to see both turtles laying their eggs (late at night) and newborn turtles being released into the sea (early morning).

The water at the beach is crystal clear, and the sand is volcanic grey in hue. Because of this, swimming and snorkeling are ideal. Unfortunately, sunbathing is not recommended due to the presence of sand flies. At low tide, the beach appears gloomy with some mangrove trees hugging the shoreline and decaying corals rupturing the surface.

4. Trek to See Active Mud Volcanoes

Nestled amidst thick forests in Diglipur are the remarkable Mud volcanoes. These are little muddy craters, similar to their siblings in Baratang, formed by natural gasses released by subterranean organic debris that is slowly decomposing. Most of the time, there is just a mound of dried mud and a few tiny bubbling puddles, so it is not a particularly impressive sight. Nonetheless, exploring the 41 active muddy craters and taking in the surrounding scenery and fauna is possible.

5. At Lamia Bay Beach, unwind.

Lamia Bay, also known as Pebble Beach, is located at the base of the Saddle Peak Trekking Path, roughly two kilometers from Kalipur Beach. There are a couple turtle hatcheries here as well as excellent local fishing. Not many travelers are aware of this beach.

How to get there: From Diglipur town, buses arrive here every 30 minutes. On the route to the beach, private taxis and rickshaws are also readily accessible (not return).

6. Check Out Ramnagar Beach To See Turtle Nests

Andaman is the ideal beach spot for ecotourism. a little distance from the main jetty of Aerial Bay. This location, which boasts a lengthy beach, is the nicest beach in Diglipur. Here, you can swim, relax, and observe the hatchery, the steps taken to increase the population of turtles, and how the eggs laid by the turtles are protected.
